âHi, Cain? Itâs Marianne,â I said, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible. It had taken me a good twenty minutes to work up the nerve to call him in the first place. I didnât want it to seem like every time I called it was for a favorâ¦especially when heâd saved my life recently.
Again.
âOf course I knew it was you, Marianne,â Cain said in his deep, velvety voice on the other end of the call. âAnd might I say that itâs wonderful to hear from you? Iâve been thinking about you.â
âYouâ¦you have?â I asked, and my cheeks immediately flooded with color.
I was glad I was just sitting in my car in the parking lot of the hospital. Hearing his voice shook me a little more than Iâd expected, and despite all the pain and sorrow Iâd been feeling in the last few days, getting to talk to him gave me some peace of mind and quiet in my heart. I didnât know why it had taken me so long to build up the confidence to call him in the first place.
âYes,â he said. âHave you been well?â
I almost answered him automatically, but I hesitated, deciding instead to be honest. âI â well, no, not really,â I said. âItâs been a really hard couple of days.â
âOhâ¦â he said. âWell, Iâm very sorry to hear that. Would you like to discuss it in person?â
My heart skipped. âI donât want to bother you if youâre working.â
âItâs almost time for my break anyway,â he said. âWhy donât you come down to the mortuary, and we can have tea or something together.â
âOâ¦okay,â I said. I was ready to actually talk about what was happening. âIâll be right down.â
Memories about the night Iâd ended up at the Blackburn castle chased themselves around in my mind as I drove toward the mortuary a few blocks away. I thought about how Iâd felt, being that close to Cain. Iâd seen a far more affectionate and sensitive side to him. Heâd taken such good care of me that I found myself thinking about it long after Iâd left his houseâ¦
I was almost used to visiting him by now. The secretary recognized me when I walked in, and she waved me through the large doors that lead underground to the basement where Cainâs office was.
I ignored all the open doors down the long, dimly lit hall, not wanting to see any bodies, and wondering vaguely if Amanda was in any of these rooms.
A face peeked out of a room at the end of the hall, and I recognized the head of dark hair at once.
My heart caught in my throat as he turned around and spotted me.
His green eyes lit up as they fixed on me. âI thought I heard footsteps,â he said. He leaned casually against his doorframe, smiling at me.
It made my heart begin to race as I drew closer to him.
âHello, Marianne,â he said, a smile tugging at one corner of his lips. âItâs good to see you again.
